Left to right: “After Matisse Bathers By A River”, “Blue, Pink, White”.

This show was near the end of my pattern painting.  The large painting derives from the Matisse Bathers by A River in The Chicago Art Institute.  Merging toward this less formal kind of composition allowed me to slip quietly out of my roots in formal composition.  My mind was always with logic and geometry but my spirit favored chance and dissonance.  Expressionism was where I wanted to go at this point.  I wanted to get as far away from “composing” a painting as I could.
